Book Review | The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
Hey my lovelies, welcome back to the first blog post of February and we're kicking things off with another book review this week! I actually had a really wonderful reading month in January and read a total of 3 books (might not seem a lot but that's good for me!) and they were all absolutely brilliant. I was in a real reading slump at the end of 2020 and now feel like the new year has brought a fresh start and I have some great books lined up on my #tbr. The first instalment of my February series #Februreels | A Reel Every Friday in February has also just gone live over on my Instagram, so make sure to go and check it out and give it some love. Before we get into my thoughts on The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, make sure you're sat comfortably and have snacks at the ready!
Firstly, I just have to say, that if this book is on your #tbr and you're thinking of purchasing it, then you need to get yourselves to your local supermarket straight away (it's only £8 in both Sainsbury's and Tescos) and pick it up, because this is an absolute MUST read! I actually found taking notes whilst reading this one really difficult, as I was so engrossed in the storyline and pace of the book that I didn't feel the need to write anything down other than brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
If I were to ever write a novel, I would 1000% want it to sound like this. Osman's writing is both eloquent and sophisticated, whilst remaining accessible and easy to read. The smaller chapters mean the book reads at a fast pace which compliments the plot and storyline. There are multiple storylines intertwined, and each chapter focuses on the story from one character's perspective, other than Joyce. Her chapters are titled with her name and written in an epistolary/diary format which helps interject some rest-bite from the fast-paced remainder of the novel.
This book had me laughing out loud from the very beginning, whilst having real heartwarming moments. It handles the grisly scene of a murder with enough conviction of a crime novel whilst still remaining somewhat lighthearted. I fell in love with the Thursday murder club and all of their individual characteristics, and will be very disappointed if I don't retire to Cooper's Chase and become one of their members. It's no surprise that this book is witty like it's author (he co-presents the UK game show Pointless) and has the right amount of twists and turns to keep you hooked throughout.
Overall, I rated this book ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️.5! I do think the twists and turns can be a little bit complicated if you're not paying attention to the storyline, but other than that this was the perfect book to curl up with on the sofa and enjoy some escapism during this difficult time.
So in January we had 1 four star read and 2 four and a half star reads, which is what I call a good reading month. I'm still holding out for that perfect 5 star read, here's to hoping I find it in February! Lots of love xoxo
